When I was 28 years old I got my first dog. And I walk her allll the time; and it wasn’t until having a dog did I routinely walk around my neighborhood.

This got me super familiar with the trees that live in my neighborhood with me. And surprisingly, sometimes I can appreciate them more during our night-walks.

I made a newsletter about these about 3 years ago when I started collecting photos of my favorite tree silhouettes. I figure we’re about due for another visit to this topic.

I’m lucky that my community has a lot of large mature and veteran trees in it. During these night walks, in addition to tree-seeking, I’ve heard numerous different owl species, see plenty of bats, and encounter many opossum and raccoons. Just last week, I had a brief encounter with a flying squirrel!

Caught something swoop towards me out of the corner of my eye. Thinking it was a bat, which would be extremely out of season, I snap my head towards the movement. 10 feet from me on a trunk of an oak, a flying squirrel stared right back at me before scurrying upwards.

The pale, featureless sky makes tree architecture really stand out. I don’t have to squint at all, I can behold a tree quite easily in the dark. With their leaves on, it is a lot harder to see the detail.

This asymmetric tree is one of my favorites. You can see the tree’s “top” is offset from its trunk. Pretty cool and unique shape.

Fog also creates a great pale, featureless background to behold some trees too. Here’s another massive oak from my neighborhood.

I do look at trees in the daytime too lol. This old beech tree at a disc golf course has long since lost its top. Now the crown has filled-in that empty space, and has create a very square-shaped tree.

Things are ramping up at the practice too. People rushing to get their oak-work taken care of now that the oak-wilt window is shrinking. And it is shrinking fast!

The forecast looks like we might be pushing our March oak-schedule into the start of next oak-season. I see some 50’s and 60’s coming up!
