Hellooooo this is going to be brief because I have a lot to do today. I’ve got something cool to tell you. We’ve accepted an invitation to present about Tree First’s business model. We’ll be speaking in Edmonton, Alberta Canada on June 21st at the inaugural Spoke ‘n Loam conference. I’m very excited and nervous to do this. But I am more afraid of not doing this than I am to do it. If we don’t do this, it partially defeats the purpose of our work. Here’s the description I wrote of our presentation: Our project didn’t begin with the intention of making something different just for the sake of it. The Tree First project began to provide conscientious tree care in an area where it was lacking—you know, the arborists’ dream. We soon realized we were nurturing an embryo of an idea that would appeal to homeowners and other arborists. Our approach was unique, and we finally feel as though we have enough to say. At Spoke ‘n Loam 2024, we share a look behind the curtain of what we call the ‘Practitioner Model’ for arboriculture: the way we practice. This model solves a number of problems caused by traditional tree care business practices by giving agency to the arborists working on the trees. Our presentation will cover a timeline of this project up to the current day, the philosophy behind it, its limitations, its advantages and, how it might grow in future. It might just be a framework that can enable you to be an ‘arborist practitioner’ yourself. We think input from the international arborist community will further refine this idea. Ultimately, our intention with sharing is to encourage others. To demonstrate that there is not only a single way to operate a tree care business. Eventually, we hope more creative and practitioner-based models begin to emerge because the trees are better off when we avoid production-based business models.
Trees deserve better than that.
