We’re on time today. Hell yeah.

What’s in today’s newsletter? You know, the newsletters that I’m the least prepared to write seem like the best ones. This is one of those.

Here’s what’s on my mind right now as I reflect on last month’s Tree First stuff:

• Finally getting that stupid PHC video off my plate

• Upcoming topic ideas to write about / make a video about

• ‘Treatment Season’ coming to a close

It’s funny; the videos I spend the least amount of time and effort on I feel the best about. This most recent video and article—not so much

I took 52 pages of notes for that video and I revised the script over and over, even re-writing it entirely. And I still feel like it didn’t really achieve what I wanted it to in terms of the message.

Because the script was so long, I sorta got lost in the sauce. I think I needed to be more clear about when we entered into a new section/topic. I wish I would’ve emphasized certain points more and certain points less.

Above all, more emphasis should have been placed on the ease at which clients receive the information, in my experience. A lot of the times people are looking for perspective on these kinds of things; they don’t always know what is worthwhile to think about.

Sometimes they’ve got to be shown what to care about, and how.

That was the main underlying message I wanted to relay, and I don’t think I did that.

Like I said above, sometimes the content I produce that really turns out nicely and achieves a good message is stuff that’s produced on the fly. Really quick and easy, like the Silver Maple video. Sure, if I wrote a script I probably could’ve had more precise language or points. But all in all, that was a good piece.

So here’s what I’m currently thinking for what’ll come next. Considering this most recent article/video was more critical and serious, I’m thinking something shorter with some levity.

Here are some topics I’m chewing on right now:

• Had some folks ask for some veteran and ancient tree reading material. Thinking of compiling some resources to yap about for a ~15 minute long video
  

• Dendrotelmata: Water holes in trees and their ecological significance. My friend Sam Cannon called dibs on writing this piece for the Tree First website. His prose is so poetic, I really think his voice would complement ours. And would be a good change of pace from my voice for the readership.
  
  But low key I also think this idea is super interesting to write about lol.
  

• Tools to assess tree health with. Lots of emphasis on risk assessment tools in the industry, and lots of people conflate risks with health. This topic would specifically emphasize the health element.

Just like with this newsletter, I want to create it quickly and cleanly. I don’t want to have this nagging pressure in my creative process like the PHC video had. I can see very clearly that messed up the result.

So whatever I choose next, I’ll give myself limited time to do it.

I haven’t landed on which topic to commit to just yet. Giving myself some time to not work on a project for the time.

I’ve been feeling like businessing has really taken me away from study. Now that our heavy treatment season is wrapping up, I’ll have more time for that. But I think I need a quasi-break.

Need some time to be empty, you know?
